David Salmela, award-winning architect and designer, grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota and taught himself design, then spent 46 years discovering appropriate design opportunities within the Minnesota culture.

David has won over 50 regional and national design awards, including National AIA Honor Awards and the AIA Minnesota Gold Medal. His logic incorporates natural light and is heavily influenced by Minnesota’s Scandinavian roots.

His company, Salmela Architect, has focused on projects that transform the region. Their collaborative design team created the common interest community of Jackson Meadow within the Swedish immigrant settlement of Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. They have also created an urban design complex of contextual houses on the Duluth hillside.
