“I have come to love the community of Marine. One church, one general store, one gas station, one elementary school and 600 great people. It is more than I could have hoped for and is all just a step out my front door.” -- Mary Fernstrum, Wife, Mother, Poet and Jackson Meadow Resident

A Sense of Neighborhood

Jackson Meadow is a place where people know and care for each other as well as the land. It is a place where children run together exploring nature’s playground. Jackson Meadow is peaceful, natural and fun. It is the perfect place for people who want to slow down, savor living, and align their values with their lifestyle. It is a place for long walks in the woods and neighborhood snow football games. It is also a place to have neighbors over for a bonfire, or to enjoy colorful sunsets from the porch.

Jackson Meadow’s entire community was designed to foster neighborly interaction. Front yards of all homes converge on walking paths and trails. Narrow, slow roads are functional yet de-emphasized.

Garages are generally not attached to homes. According to architect David Salmela, the reason for this is simple, “In the suburbs, you drive directly into your garage. There is no opportunity to wave to a neighbor--even if you weren’t too far away from them.” Developer Harold Teasdale puts it another way, “This provides the opportunity for people to stop interacting with their garages and start interacting with their neighbors.”

The Spirit of Community and Nature

“Mike and I wanted a pied-à-terre in the country, although most people do it the opposite way. But, Jackson Meadow just charmed us totally. There are not many places where you actually want to look outside at your neighbors.”
--Penny Winton, soon-to-be Jackson Meadow Resident

The welcoming spirit of Jackson Meadow lies in the diversity of people who make this place their home. From retirees, to writers and artists, to business professionals to young families with children, the common denominator linking residents to each other is the overwhelming feeling of finally being home. Most residents enjoy being involved in community activities that range from organizing social functions, (like the Holiday Party and Summer Solstice Evening Dance Party), to open space planning and trail mowing on the Jackson Meadow tractor.

Along with community gatherings there are numerous outdoor activities to enjoy. In the winter, Jackson Meadow resident’s cross-country ski out their front doors and onto the nearly 6 mile trail system which surrounds the community. Jackson Meadow’s trail system also connects to the broader community of Marine on St. Croix and children can walk to the Marine elementary school in just ten minutes. Incidently, Marine Elementary was named a
No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School by the US Education Department. It is one of seven Minnesota schools to receive this honor.

There are many ways to enjoy being part of a vibrant community and to participate in outdoor activities with a home at Jackson Meadow.
